The Land

Bangladesh is remembered for its rivers and its flatness — but climb into the south-east, into the Chittagong Hill Tracts, and the country stands up. Ridgeline stacks behind ridgeline; cloud settles into the valleys at dawn; a made lake spreads out between drowned hills. This page is a quiet record of that other Bangladesh.

A whole country you can only see when you stop moving through it.

Nearly everything here is made at the edges of the day, on foot, in available light — Bandarban and Sajek in the high green, Rangamati out on the water, Mirsharai where the hills break into waterfalls. Nothing is staged; the land is already composed, and the work is only in waiting for it to hold still.

Golden Hour

The last light on the water

The hour when the sun drops behind the ridgelines and the whole lake turns to gold — the reason to be out before dawn and to stay past dusk.

Life on the Water

A lake this size is not scenery to the people who live on it — it is work. Before the tourists’ boats and after them, the fishermen of Rangamati are out on the water, the way they have been since the valley first filled.

How it’s made

Patience, light, and a long lens

01 — The Light
Edges of the day

Almost everything here is made in the first or last hour of light, when the sun is low enough to model the hills and turn the water gold. Midday in Bangladesh is flat and white — the wrong time to photograph land.

02 — The Kit
Fuji & Canon, 35 & 70–200

A Fujifilm XT-10 and XT-4 with a 35mm for the close, quiet frames; a Canon 5D Mark III with a 70–200mm to reach across the water and compress the ridgelines. Light enough to carry all day on foot.

03 — The Frame
Composed, not staged

Nothing is moved or manufactured. The work is in choosing where to stand and how long to wait — for a boat to cross the gold, for the cloud to lift off a ridge, for the land to hold still long enough to be true.

Questions

On working the land

Where in Bangladesh were these made?+
Mostly the Chittagong Hill Tracts — the mountains of Bandarban and Sajek Valley, the lakes and rivers around Rangamati, and the waterfalls of Mirsharai in Chattogram. It’s the greenest, most vertical part of the country, and the one most worth slowing down for.
Are the colours edited heavily?+
No. The gold you see is the real light of the last hour of the day. I edit for contrast and tone the way you would in a darkroom, but I don’t add colour that wasn’t there or move things that were.
Can I commission landscape or travel work?+
Yes. I take on travel, tourism and editorial assignments across Bangladesh — location scouting, hill-country coverage, and brand work that needs a real sense of place. Tell me what you have in mind and I’ll be honest about whether it’s a fit.
Are prints of these available?+
