Bogalake, Bandarban: Where Geology and Legend Tell the Same Story
High in the hills of Bandarban, roughly seventy kilometres from town and eighteen from Ruma, sits a small body of water that geologists still argue about and the Khumi people have never needed to. Bogalake, properly known as Bagakain Lake, is one of only a handful of true lakes in Bangladesh, a country otherwise defined by rivers, floodplains, and haors. Understanding how it got there means holding two separate accounts side by side: what the rock says, and what the story says. Neither one has fully settled the argument.

One of Bangladesh’s Rarest Landforms
Most of what Bangladesh calls a lake is technically something else. A beel, a haor, a seasonal floodplain that fills and empties with the monsoon. True lakes, in the strict geological sense, barely exist here.
Both Bogalake and Raikhong sit in the same geological setting: valleys carved into what scientists call Tertiary hill terrain, hills formed from thinly layered, easily eroded siltstone and shale, resting on a much harder, compact sandstone base. Soft rock above, unyielding rock beneath. That combination turns out to explain almost everything.
Three Theories, One Landscape
For decades, three separate explanations have competed for the story of how Bogalake came to exist.
The first holds that the lake sits inside the crater of a long dead mud volcano, its basin the remnant of ancient volcanic collapse. The second argues for a meteorite impact, a fallen fragment from space that punched a depression into the hillside, later filled by rain. The third, and the theory that has gained the most traction among recent researchers, points to a massive landslide: a valley mouth sealed shut by collapsing hillside, damming what would otherwise have been a stream into a still, closed lake.
Bangladeshi geologists including Rahman and Chowdhury, Rashid, and Khan and colleagues have each weighed in on this debate across research spanning more than two decades, and the disagreement has never fully resolved. What has become clearer, though, is which theory the physical evidence most strongly supports.
What the Rock Actually Says
A geological study of the site mapped the surrounding hills in detail and found something significant: the terrain shows no evidence of volcanic activity at all. No lava rock, no volcanic vent structure, none of the mineral signatures a genuine volcanic crater would leave behind.
What the researchers did find were faults. Three of them cutting through the Bogalake basin, running in roughly northeast to southwest and northwest to southeast directions, exactly the kind of fractures that precede large scale slope failure. Around the neighbouring Raikhong Lake, researchers mapped seven such faults.
These fault lines, combined with dating evidence pulled from microscopic fossilised algae called diatoms and radiocarbon analysis, allowed scientists to reconstruct a rough timeline. Their conclusion: over the past fifteen hundred years, this region experienced roughly thirteen alternating phases of weak and intense monsoon activity. During the most intense of these phases, monsoon rainfall combined with large earthquakes to trigger catastrophic landslides. Landslides massive enough to completely seal off a valley mouth, damming the water behind it and forming the basin that would become Bogalake.
In other words, the leading scientific account is not a volcano and is not a meteor. It is water, earthquake, and collapsing hillside, acting together over centuries, sealing a valley shut until it had nowhere left to go but up.
The Dragon and the God: Two Sacred Lakes, Two Legends
Science reconstructs a geological timeline. The Khumi people who have lived beside this lake for generations tell a different kind of history, one measured in devotion rather than radiocarbon dates.
Their account holds that a deity once lived in the forest that would become the lake basin. The village killed it, ate it, and what returned was not the deity any longer but a dragon. “Boga,” in the Bawm language, means precisely that: a fiery dragon. Its rage split the hillside. The village that had done the killing was buried in the collapse, and rain filled what remained, forming the lake that carries the dragon’s name to this day. Local tradition places this story roughly two thousand years in the past, a number that, remarkably, sits within the same broad window the geological dating suggests for the region’s landslide activity.
What makes this more than an isolated folk tale is the existence of a near identical pattern just across the hills, at Raikhong Lake. There, the local tribal community holds an entirely separate legend: that their god, Alushingra, dug a vast hole into the earth in a single minute, and the water that filled it became the lake. Two lakes, two different communities, two unrelated deities, and yet the same underlying instinct: that a lake this still, this sudden seeming in a landscape of hills, could only have been made by something greater than erosion.
Both lakes, notably, are venerated by the communities who live around them. This is not decorative folklore performed for visitors. It is a living framework through which two different hill communities have made sense of an unusual landform for longer than any written record of the region exists.
The Water That Refuses to Behave Consistently
Local memory holds that Bogalake’s water never turns dirty and never meaningfully rises or falls, a claim that is only partly accurate, and more interesting for where it breaks down. The lake is genuinely closed, with no visible inlet or outlet. Rainfall is its only confirmed water source. For most of the year, this produces the clear, still turquoise the lake is known for.
But every year, in April and May, the water changes. It turns muddy, shifts colour, then clears again without explanation offered by anyone living beside it. Scientific investigation in 1973 found something more dramatic still: water too acidic at that time to support any form of aquatic life. By 1995, the same lake had transformed into a thriving ecosystem, home to fish and aquatic plants that residents now farm and rely on. What caused that transformation across two decades remains, like the lake’s formation, only partially explained.
The Researchers Who Came, and Left
Locals speak of a foreign team that came here once, to study the water, the depth, the peculiar chemistry of the place.
There is a trace of it in the record. A researcher named Garnier appears in the citations of a 2012 Bangladeshi geological study on the lake’s formation, sitting alongside the Bangladeshi scientists still arguing over where this basin came from.
I cannot tell you what they found, or how long they stayed.
But the outcome suits the place. They came. They studied it. The argument remains open.
Visiting Bogalake
When to go: October to March. Cool, dry, roads passable. June to September brings monsoon rain heavy enough to make the final stretch genuinely difficult.
Getting there: Bandarban town, then Ruma Upazila by road. From Ruma, the last leg is a reserved jeep, locally called a Chander Gari, car of the moon, or on foot if you are trekking through the surrounding villages. Munlai Para, a Bawm village of around fifty four households, sits on this route as the gateway.
Permits: The Chittagong Hill Tracts require travel permission, and rules are stricter for foreign visitors. Confirm current requirements before committing to dates.
Staying: Indigenous guesthouses sit at the lake’s edge. Most visitors come for the daylight and leave. They miss the better half of it.

A Landscape That Keeps Its Own Counsel
Bogalake sits at an unusual intersection: rare enough geologically to draw serious scientific study, sacred enough culturally to have generated an origin story that predates any of that science by centuries, and still, in certain respects, not fully understood by either account. The faults are mapped. The dating is done. The Khumi have told the same story for two thousand years. And still, every April, the water clouds over and no one, geologist or elder, has offered a complete answer for why.
That, more than the turquoise colour or the dramatic setting, may be what actually makes Bogalake worth the difficult road to reach it:a landscape that has been studied, worshipped, and photographed for generations, and has still not entirely given up its explanation.
